On Monday, August 19, 2024, at approximately 6:40 a.m., the Storm Lake Police Department was called to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Emergency Room, located at 1525 West 5th Street in Storm Lake, for a report of a victim who sustained serious injuries to the upper body. Police met with the victim, who reported that on this date, at approximately 5:00 a.m., she was assaulted by a male suspect armed with a machete while walking in the 300 block of West 7th Street in Storm Lake. Police later identified the suspect in the incident as Ovidio Saul Cortez Bermudez, age 26 of Storm Lake. At 9:00 a.m. on the same day, they located Cortez Bermudez at a residence in the 700 block of Geneseo Street, where he was taken into custody without incident. Cortez Bermudez was charged with the following:
Intentional Injury Causing Serious Injury, a Class C Felony
Carrying Weapons with Intent, a Class D Felony
Cortez Bermudez was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail where his bond was set at $15,000.
On Sunday, August 18, at approximately 1:30 a.m., Storm Lake Police Department officers were conducting a foot patrol in the 500 Block of Erie Street in Storm Lake when they observed a vehicle driving recklessly. The vehicle collided with another vehicle that was parked with no passengers. The first vehicle fled the scene. Officers stopped the vehicle in the 500 Block of Erie and contacted the driver identified as Luis Rodriguez Trejo, 21 of Storm Lake. Police allege Rodriguez Trejo showed signs of alcohol impairment and had a revoked driving status in Iowa. Rodriguez Trejo was arrested at the scene and transported to the Buena Vista County Jail for further investigation. Rodriguez Trejo was ultimately booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on the following charges:
Driving While Intoxicated, 3rd Offense, Class D Felony
Driving While Prohibited, Aggravated Misdemeanor
Driving While License Revoked, Gross Misdemeanor
Open Container and Violation of Restricted License Conditions, both scheduled violations
Rodriguez Trejo was booked and held on $8,679 bail.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
