Las escuelas de Denison celebran asociación con negocios

El programa Community Business Partner Program (programa de compañeros de negocios, por su traducción al español), de la escuela de Denison dio inicio el lunes por la mañana en la escuela primaria Denison. Representantes de las diferentes empresas asociadas con las aulas de los estudiantes se reunieron en el gimnasio para conectarse nuevamente con los maestros.
El programa Community Business Partner involucra a las aulas de la escuela primaria de Denison y la escuela primaria Broadway.
Aproximadamente 858 estudiantes se benefician por los 39 socios comerciales de la comunidad que participan en el programa.
Sierra Frehse, consejera de las escuelas Denison Elementary y Broadway Elementary, dijo que el propósito del programa es construir conexiones y relaciones entre la escuela y las comunidades comerciales.
“No solo para nosotros como adultos, sino para nuestros hijos; para eso estamos aquí. Y para exponerlos a nuestra comunidad de socios comerciales y la amplia variedad de empresas que tenemos en Denison,” dijo.
Otro objetivo del programa es enseñarles a los niños la importancia que el carácter y determinación ejerce en el ser humano a cualquier edad. “El carácter es importante no solo aquí en nuestra escuela, sino en cualquier parte de la comunidad y en el mundo que los rodea,” dijo Sierra.
Sierra agradeció a los maestros por asociarse con las empresas para ayudar a los estudiantes a aprender más sobre la comunidad y agradeció a los representantes de las empresas por donar su tiempo y compromiso con los estudiantes.
Se anima a los representantes de las empresas a reunirse o visitar las aulas tres veces al año, o más, si es posible, participando en actividades o hablando sobre las habilidades y los rasgos de carácter que son importantes en sus empresas.
Sin embargo, se hace hincapié en la calidad de las visitas por encima de la cantidad de visitas.

“Cuando observas un distrito escolar con esa demografía, sabes que hay algunos desafíos que lo acompañan, pero también es una gran oportunidad para celebrar la diversidad y sacar también provecho de ella,” dijo Kim.
De igual manera dijo, que según la evaluación del estado de Iowa, Denison está por encima del promedio estatal en lenguaje y literatura, y el distrito también tiene una puntuación por encima del promedio estatal en matemáticas.
También señaló que el distrito tiene 331 empleados, de los cuales 165 son maestros.
“Probablemente hayas escuchado que hay una escasez de maestros en todo el estado y la nación. Y los distritos escolares de todo el país están buscando maestros y tratando de conseguir maestros para las aulas y para los puestos,” dijo Kim. “En Denison, tenemos todos nuestros puestos cubiertos. Y también tenemos una alta tasa de retención de 88,8%, casi el 90% de los maestros que estaban en las aulas en 2021-22 regresaron al mismo edificio el año siguiente.”

Denison Schools Celebrate Partnership with Businesses

Denison Elementary School’s Community Business Partner Program kicked off Monday morning at Denison Elementary School. Representatives from the different businesses that partner with students’ classrooms gathered in the gym to reconnect with teachers.
The Community Business Partner Program involves classrooms at Denison Elementary School and Broadway Elementary School.
Approximately 858 students benefit from the 39 community business partners that participate in the program.
Sierra Frehse, counselor at Denison Elementary and Broadway Elementary, said the purpose of the program is to build connections and relationships between the school and business communities.
“Not just for us as adults, but for our kids; that’s what we’re here for. And to expose them to our community of business partners and the wide variety of businesses that we have in Denison,” she said.
Another goal of the program is to teach children the importance that character and determination play in a human being at any age. “Character is important not just here at our school, but everywhere in the community and the world around them,” Sierra said.
Sierra thanked teachers for partnering with businesses to help students learn more about the community and thanked business representatives for donating their time and commitment to students.
Business representatives are encouraged to meet or visit classrooms three times a year, or more if possible, participating in activities or talking about skills and character traits that are important in their businesses.
However, the emphasis is on the quality of visits over the quantity of visits.

It is worth mentioning that several presentations were launched during the program.
A new business partner this year is Bake Shop and Café.
A new teacher at Denison Elementary School is Esmerelda Luna, a second grade teacher in the dual language program.
Lambert Family Chiropractic was recognized for being a business partner for 15 years.
Bret Larson was introduced as the new principal of Broadway Elementary School.
Dr. Kim Buryanek, the new superintendent of the Denison and Schleswig school districts, was introduced. Prior to coming to Denison, Buryanek worked at the Iowa Department of Education as administrator of the division of learning and outcomes for pre-K-12. Prior to that, she was associate superintendent and director of curriculum for the Sioux City School District for 10 years.
She also served as a principal for grades 6-12 at her alma mater, West Sioux in Hawarden.
She began her career as a high school English teacher and then became an administrator for school districts in South Dakota and Montana.
“I learned a little bit about the Community Business Partner Program, and for a program like this to run and thrive for 19 years is a real example,” Kim said. “I know school districts all over Iowa are trying to get something like this up and running. Typically, we start at the secondary level and build out our programming supports and our career academy concepts. And then eventually you get to the elementary level and you realize how important it is to start earlier rather than later. And now it’s here. So, thank you for your dedication, for your commitment, and for being a community partner. It’s really important for us and for the students.”
She also gave the following information about the demographics of the Denison Community School District over the past year.
Between kindergarten and 12th grade, there were more than 2,100 students, making it the 44th largest school district in Iowa.
65% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch.
68% of students were Hispanic.
35% of students are English language learners, as English is not their native language.
“When you look at a school district with those demographics, you know there are some challenges that go along with it, but it’s also a great opportunity to celebrate diversity and take advantage of it as well,” Kim said.
He also said that according to the Iowa state assessment, Denison is above the state average in language arts, and the district also scores above the state average in math.
He also noted that the district has 331 employees, of which 165 are teachers.
“You’ve probably heard that there is a teacher shortage across the state and the nation. And school districts across the country are looking for teachers and trying to get teachers for classrooms and for positions,” Kim said. “At Denison, we have all of our positions filled. And we also have a high retention rate of 88.8%, almost 90% of the teachers who were in classrooms in 2021-22 returned to the same building the following year.”
She said this statistic speaks well of the district and the community. “Kids leave Denison, become teachers, go to college and want to come back here. And that’s not always the case,” she said. “A lot of times kids go off to college and want to get as far away as possible and don’t want to come back. There’s something really special here, and I felt that when I first came. The people are so kind and welcoming. And they’ve created a great community that people want to come back to.”
