El miércoles 13 de marzo, aproximadamente a las 11:00 p. m., el Departamento de Policía y el Departamento de Bomberos de Storm Lake fueron enviados a Royal Laundromat, en 221 West Milwaukee Avenue en Storm Lake, por una llamada que recibieron reportando que un bote de basura se encontraba en llamas afuera del edificio. On Wednesday, March 13, at approximately 11:00 p.m. The Storm Lake Police Department and Storm Lake Fire Department were dispatched to the Royal Laundromat, 221 West Milwaukee Avenue in Storm Lake, for a call reporting a trash can on fire outside the building. When they arrived at the scene, passers-by had already extinguished the fire. Minor property damage was observed and no injuries were reported.
Police reviewed video from the business and observed a suspect, identified as Dany Duarte, 46, of Storm Lake, use a lighter to set fire to a trash can inside the laundromat. The fire spread and several people who were at the scene used water to extinguish the fire and removed the trash can from the building. Duarte fled the scene before authorities arrived at the scene.
On Thursday, March 14, at approximately 1:00 am, police located Duarte at West Milwaukee Ave., and Ontario Street and took him into custody without incident.
Duarte was transported and detained at the Buena Vista County Jail, where he was charged with first-degree arson, a class B felony, and was booked on $25,000 bail.
The Storm Lake Police Department was assisted by the Storm Lake Fire Department.
On Monday, March 4, at approximately 8:49 a.m., Storm Lake Police responded to a residence in the 1100 block of North Ontario Street in Storm Lake for a disturbance. Obstruction of emergency communication, a simple crime, and trespassing, a misdemeanor.
Nyaw was booked and held on $5,300 bail.
On Sunday, March 3 at approximately 9:00 a.m. The Storm Lake Police Department received a report of a robbery that occurred on the evening of March 2 at approximately 9:00 p.m. m. outside a residence in the 200 block of East 5th. Street. Police spoke with a victim who reported that a male subject had approached them, displayed a gun and demanded money while the victim was standing outside a residence in the 200 block of East 5th Street. The victim reported no injuries and the suspect fled the area toward an apartment building near the scene of the assault.
Police began the investigation, and on Tuesday, March 5, a team from the Storm Lake Police Department and the Buena Vista County SERT team executed a search warrant at the address 220 East 5th Street Apt 4, where police located the suspect in the incident identified as Netipan Ludwig, 37, of Storm Lake. Police allege that during a search of the apartment they located a BB gun in Ludwig's bedroom that matched the description of the gun shown in the robbery.
Ludwig was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery, a class B felony.
The Buena Vista County Sheriff's Office and the Ottumwa Police Department assisted the Storm Lake Police Department in the investigation.
All defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty.
