Proyecto escolar de Storm Lake pasa a la segunda fase

El 13 de septiembre se aprobó un préstamo de casi $9.95 millones para financiar la segunda fase del proyecto de Early Elementary School, para el cual la comunidad de Storm Lake emitió su vota.
De acuerdo con la página del proyecto, el préstamo debía recibir al menos un 60% del apoyo de los votantes para ser aprobado, y este recibió alrededor de un 74% - aunque la suma total no es oficial según informó el distrito escolar.
El Director de Operaciones del Distrito Escolar de Storm Lake Jeff Tollefson dijo, “Estuve muy complacido con el resultado de los votos y la cantidad de gente que estaba a favor de este préstamo.”
Jeff comentó que el distrito estaba un poco preocupado de que no hubiera habido los votos suficientes para continuar con el proyecto. “Era una posibilidad, así que solo esperábamos lo mejor.”
Cabe mencionar que el proyecto no está siendo financiado con los impuestos de la comunidad, es por eso que se requirió pedir y aprobar el préstamo para que la expansión del edificio siguiera en marcha.
En el 2019, se aprobó la fase 1 del proyecto de la Early Elementary School el que consistió en construir el edificio central de la facilidad y el ala de kindergarten; la construcción terminó a finales del 2021, y para enero de este año los estudiantes de kínder grado fueron trasladados edificio nuevo.
La segunda fase del proyecto consiste en la construcción de un espacio adicional de 31,141 pies cuadrados que será la construcción de adición para los estudiantes del primer grado, mientras que la tercera y ultima parte consiste en un ala de preescolar.

Cabe agregar, que el propósito del proyecto se debe a la creciente población de estudiantes en las escuelas, la cual sobrepasa la capacidad máxima de los edificios; Por el momento, la Elementary cuenta con 816 estudiantes, mientras que la Middle School cuenta con 780 estudiantes. Jeff comentó que estos números no son oficiales “Porque hay estudiantes que durante el año escolar se pueden se cambiar de distrito.” De igual manera, comentó: “Hemos recibido un promedio de 64.4 estudiantes al año por los pasados cinco años.”
Él también dijo que el proyecto “Va ayudará aliviar la carga de nuestras instalaciones.”
Aunque Jeff ya está en contacto con la firma de arquitectos a cargo del proyecto, aún no está seguro cuándo la fecha que dará inicio la concentración de la nueva adición, sin embargo, él espera que esté lista en agosto del 2024.

On Sept. 13, the Storm Lake community voted to approve a bond issue of nearly $9.95 million to fund the second phase of the Early Elementary School project.
According to the project page, the bond had to receive at least 60% of voter support to be approved, and it received about 74% - although the total sum is not official as the school district reported through its Facebook page the next day.
"I was very pleased with the outcome of the votes and the number of people who were in favor of this bond," said Storm Lake School District Operations Chief Jeff Tollefson.
Tollefson commented that the district was a little concerned that there would not be enough votes to continue with this project.
"It was a possibility, so we just hoped for the best," he added.
It should be added that this project is not being financed taxpayers’ money; that is why it was required to request and approve the bond so that the expansion of the building could continue.
In 2019, phase 1 of the Early Elementary School project was approved, which consisted of building the central facility structure and the kindergarten wing; the construction was completed in late 2021, and by January of this year kindergarten students were moved to the new facility from the Elementary School.
The second phase of the project consists of the construction of an additional 31,141 sf space that will serve as a wing for first-graders, while the third and final phase consists of a pre-k wing.
The purpose of this project is due to the growing population of students in the school district, which exceeds the maximum capacity of the buildings; At the moment, the Elementary School has 816 students, while Storm Lake Elementary School has 780 students; However, Tollefson commented that these numbers are not official as "several students change districts throughout the year," he explained. "We have received an average of 64.4 students a year for the past five years."
According to him, this project "would help ease the burden on our facilities," he explained.
While Tollefson has already contacted the architect in charge of the project, he is still not sure when construction of the new wing will begin. However, he hopes the first-grade wing to be open by August 2024.
At the moment, Elementary School houses students in grades 1-4, and the middle school houses students in grades 5-8; once the first-grade wing is finished in Early Elementary, it is planned to move students so that the schools are as follows: in middle school they would have grades 6th-8th, the elementary school would go from 2nd to 5th grade, and Early Elementary would go pre-k to 1st grade.
