Latino businesses with ITIN numbers can apply for the PPP loan

If you are a business owner and have not yet applied for a Payment Protection Program (PPP) relief loan, you better do it as soon as possible as the latest application day is March 31st, at 4 PM.

According to the Small Business Administration, an exclusive PPP loan application period for businesses and nonprofits with fewer than 20 employees will soon expire on March 9, 2021, at 4 PM. This special period will give lenders and community partners more time to work with the smallest businesses to submit their applications, while also ensuring that larger PPP-eligible businesses will still have plenty of time to apply for and receive support before the program expires on March 31, 2021.

Businesses and sole proprietors that have less than 20 employees have only from Wednesday, February 24 through Tuesday, March 9, 2021, at 4 pm ET

Additionally, President Biden through the SBA has looked to make changes to the PPP to expand access for sole proprietors, individuals with ITINs, returning citizens, and small business owners who previously were excluded due to not being able to pay their student loans.

The recent changes by the SBA are intended to ensure access for non-citizen small business owners who are lawful U.S. residents by clarifying that they may use Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to apply for the PPP.

Ryan Milligan, president of Carroll Commercial Saving Bank, states that business owners should take advantage of this relief opportunity offered by the Biden Administration. "This is an excellent opportunity for all businesses that could not apply in the first round to the PPP program because they did not qualify with the ITIN number for the relief loan that can be forgiven.”

Mr. Milligan clarified the requirements that the applicant must present for the loan application, “If the borrower is self-employed or a sole proprietor there is a form called Schedule C in their package of the tax return for the year 2019 or 2020. That form must be taken to the applicant's bank or to any bank. Personally, I am available to help Latinos, because time is short as there are only five days left to submit the application during the exclusive small business window, however, the program is open through the end of this month.  Also, changes effective March 3rd now allow borrowers who file a Schedule C with their tax return to calculate the loan amount based on their gross income, rather than net profit.  This increase should allow borrowers to receive more than they could have just last week."

People who apply to the PPP program should not pay any fees to the banking agent who fills out the application. “The Department of Small Business Administration has contracted with banks so that we can provide the service to the requesting businesses, they (S.B.A) are responsible for paying our fees,” said Mr. Milligan.
