Special for LA PRENSA Iowa
On August 18, the Open House was held in the schools of the Denison School District, where students and their families had the opportunity to collect their schedules, meet the teachers and give a tour around the buildings where children and teens will spend the 2022-23 school year.
Denison Elementary School
Denison Elementary School Principal Christopher Schulz shared his excitement at seeing students back in school during the event, especially since "we will finally have regular classes, like before the pandemic, this school year," he explained.
Francisco Bartolón Pérez, a father of four, told this media that he was grateful and happy for another year in which his children return to school.
"The pleasure it gives me as a parent is that they can prepare for the future," he added.
This year the school will implement a new math program as well as the good character program, which was updated last year, where the school teaches children about the Pillars of Good Character such as respect, responsibility, justice, care, among others.
In addition, Principal Schulz invited parents to communicate freely with the school and teachers in case they have any questions. He commented, "There is no such thing as a silly question, so don't hesitate to talk to us. We're here to help."
The principal also added that he is grateful that the school has all the teachers they require since "the shortage of teachers is a big problem at the national level, but I am glad that is not our case," he explained.
Denison Middle School
Denison High School Principal Patty Ryan was greeting students outside the main office where they could pick up their school schedules.
She commented that the now 6th graders had the opportunity to visit the school during the spring when they were still in 5th grade and that "it's exciting to have them back as official Denison Middle School students," she explained. "We are ready for the building to be filled with children."
"I'm glad the school year is near because the school feels so empty without the kids in the hallways," said 8th grade Language Arts Teacher Tiffany Mulligan.
She hopes to continue strengthening her connection with her students and encourages them to step out of their comfort zone this year.
"I think these are the years where you have to come out of your shell and try new things," she said.
For her part, Amber Sosa, also 8th grade Language Arts teacher, expressed her joy to know that the first day of school is near.
"I know a lot of the kids must have been a little bored at home, so I can't wait to have them back and get their minds to work," Sosa said.
Maria Cisneros accompanied her 6th grader son Luis to the Open House where despite being nervous because her son will attend a new school, she is happy that he passed the year. Although she told this outlet that she has never received complaints from her son from the school, she encourages her teachers to "make sure he doesn’t fall behind if they see that he is distracted."
The first day of school, Ryan explained, focuses on making sure children feel comfortable and welcome as well as making sure they learn to navigate the hallways safely. It also reminds parents to stay on top of notices the school will share through its online site.
Denison High School
Meanwhile, Denison High School opened its doors to 9th graders so they could familiarize themselves with the building before the first day of school, find their lockers, and learn more about different extracurricular groups that were present in the gym.
Principal Dave Wiebers gave a welcome message at the school's arts center and introduced the school counselors. He also reminded the students that "when you least expect it these four years will fly by and soon you will be walking in front of your peers and family to receive your graduate degrees."
Wendy Sánchez was one of the mothers who accompanied her children during the event. She shared that "I feel excited that [my kids] aren't going to be making noise in the house anymore," she said with a laugh. "I'm glad they're back in school, maybe they're not so much, but I am."
Sanchez commented on the importance of being part of extracurricular activities such as sports, art and music as this helps young people explore their interests and that even these activities can help them get scholarships in the future.
"You can do whatever you want if you feel like it," she added.
An example of this is her daughter Xóchitl, a very active young woman who along with her brother is going to start the 9th grade; she has been involved in sports such as volleyball, cheerleading, soccer, and gymnastics.
"Being a part of various sports has helped me develop my athletic and leadership skills as well as learn a variety of things," Xochitl explained.
Although Xóchitl is nervous to start classes, she is excited to see her friends again and to meet more people. Similarly, she advised her future peers to "try to get to know people before judging, because many times we are guided by appearances and judge without even giving others a chance."
Like Xóchitl, 9th grader Alexis Martinez feels a little nervous about attending a larger school than he is used to, but this does not stop his goals of getting more out of his high school experience and his studies.
"I'd like to try to join the basketball team at some point," Martinez explained. "Also, I would like to become a pilot once I finish school."
His uncle Luis Arévalo accompanied him to the Open House to show his support, "I'm happy for him," he explained. "I've always advised him to look forward to school, focus on a career he likes, and take advantage of this opportunity that many of us didn't have at his age, whether it's for lack of support, financial resources, or other distractors who got us out of the way."
ESL Associate Teacher Denise Garcia advises Latino and other minority students to "take advantage of everything they have at their fingertips, because when you're learning English, school is one of the best places to develop your vocabulary," she explained.
It should be added that during the first day of school students will have the opportunity to attend all their classes so that they can meet their teachers, but the rest of the school semester will go according to their usual class schedules.
