La policía de Storm Lake dona fondos para la comunidad

La Asociación de policía en Storm Lake busca dar a la comunidad como muestra de agradecimiento por el apoyo que las autoridades y otro personal del departamento han recibido a lo largo del año.

Los equipos de emergencia como policías, médicos y bomberos hacen lo posible para cumplir con su propósito de servir a la comunidad. Es por esto que muchas personas buscan agradecerles por sus servicios haciendo gestos pequeños como llevarlos postres, café o agua al departamento de policía.
Sin embargo, la Asociación de Policía de Storm Lake decidió que este año ellos serian quienes harían un gesto de agradecimiento hacia la comunidad por todo el apoyo que les han ofrecido este año, es por eso que comenzaron el programa “Pay it forward” (págalo por adelantado, por su traducción al español).
Patrick Diekman, presidente de la asociación, explicó que cada viernes la asociación de policía escogerá a un negocio local al que le darán un fondo monetario con el propósito de que este se use para pagar una parte de las compras de los clientes durante el día. “Cuando entregamos el dinero a los negocios, tratamos de ofrecer algunas sugerencias sobre cómo repartir los fondos entre los clientes, pero al final del día, los negocios sabrán que hacer,” agregó.
Al cierre de esta edición, Patrick comentó que el primer negocio al que donaron fue a Scooter’s Coffee, más se negó a compartir cuánto dinero la asociación donó o planea donar a futuros negocios ya que “esto podría cambiar.”
Cabe agregar que el programa comenzó el 2 de diciembre, ya que la asociación quería llevarlo a cabo durante la temporada festiva.
“Estamos orgullosos del alcance comunitario que tenemos ya que le da una oportunidad a la policía de usar nuestra plataforma para hacer algo positivo en la comunidad e inspirar a los demás de hacer lo mismo,” Patrick dijo. “La positividad es algo contagioso, así que creemos que este gesto alentara a otros a pasar esta amabilidad a alguien más, y así expandirse a través de la comunidad.”
Patrick compartió con este medio que planean tener este programa por un año y que, si se recibe una buena respuesta, esperan poder continuarlo en el futuro además de ofrecer otros programas de ayuda.
“Siempre planeamos usar cierta cantidad de dinero para los programas comunitarios que ofrecemos, pero al pasar el tiempo se va sumando más personas que apoyan nuestros proyectos, por lo que nuestro presupuesto incrementa y los resultados terminan siendo más grande lo que esperábamos,” explicó.
Otros programas comunitarios que ha hecho la asociación de policías incluyen la adición de un congelador a una furgoneta militar llamada “Yumvee,” la cual sirve para almacenar paletas de nieve que se regalan a la comunidad durante el verano; de igual manera, el proyecto Hoop Dream se creó con la meta de construir media cancha de baloncesto en el parque Seneca, detrás del departamento de policía. Sin embargo, gracias al apoyo y donaciones de la comunidad, se logró construir una cancha de tamaño completo.
“Este es el tipo de cosas que nos encanta hacer ya que a nadie de los oficiales les gusta entregar multas o llevar a las personas a la cárcel, es por eso que queremos hacer algo más significativo como hacer una diferencia en la vida de las personas y hacer de nuestra comunidad un mejor lugar,” comentó. “Estamos muy emocionados de ver que tan lejos podemos ir con los nuestros proyectos.”

SL Police Association gives back to the community
Storm Lake Police Association wants to give back to the community as a thank you for all the support that it has shown to the law enforcement officers and the rest of the staff at the department throughout the year.

Emergency response teams such as police, EMS and firefighters do their best to fulfill their purpose of serving the community. Because of this, many people make sure to thank them for their services by making small gestures such as bringing desserts, coffee or water to the police department.
However, the Storm Lake Police Association decided that this year they would be the ones who would make a gesture of gratitude to the community for all the support they have offered this year by starting the "Pay it forward" program.
Patrick Diekman, president of the association, explained that every Friday the police association will choose a local business to give a monetary fund with the goal of using it to pay for a portion of customers' purchases during the day.
"When we give the money to businesses, we try to offer some suggestions on how to distribute the funds among customers, but at the end of the day, businesses will know what to do," he added.
At the closing of this edition, Diekman said the first business they donated to was Scooter's Coffee but declined to share how much money the association donated or plans to donate to future businesses as "this could change."
“We really take a lot of pride in the community outreach that we do, because we have an opportunity to really use our platform to do a good in our community and inspire others to do the same,” Diekman said. “Positivity is just contagious, so we think that this will encourage others to pass that kindness to someone else and spread it throughout the community.”
It should be added that the program began on December 2, as the association wanted to start the program during the holiday season.
Diekman shared with this media that they plan to have this program for a year and that, if they receive a good response, they hope to continue it in the future in addition to offering other community programs.
“Every project that we ever had we plan a budget, but for the coming days and months we have people that want to become a part of it,” he said. “Every project that we have starts with a certain price or scale, but it ends up becoming so much bigger of a project than what we have anticipated.”
Other community programs the police association has done include adding a freezer to a military van called "Yumvee," which is used to store ice cream that is given to the community during the summer; Similarly, the Hoop Dream project was created with the goal of building half-sized basketball court in Seneca Park, behind the police department. However, thanks to the support and donations of the community, they built a full-size court instead.
“This is the type of stuff that we love to do, because it’s fun,” he added. “None of us likes writing tickets or taking people to jail, we want to be something more than that by making a difference in people’s life and making the community a better place, so we take advantage of every opportunity we have to do that; We’re really excited to see where this goes.”
