Inauguran institución educativa en Storm Lake

El pasado 27 de abril, la comunidad de Storm Lake se reunió junto con varios miembros del ayuntamiento y trabajadores del Colegio Comunitario Iowa Central (ICCC, por sus siglas en inglés) para la ceremonia de inauguración que dará inicio a la construcción del nuevo centro educativo de ICCC.
El alcalde de la ciudad Mike Porsch dió la bienvenida los presentes y compartió unas palabras sobre el nuevo proyecto, al igual que se refirió a la institución educativa como una parte integral de la comunidad. “Aplaudo que ICCC haya decidido expandirse en Storm Lake,” comentó. “Es una institución que sigue avanzando en el mundo de la educación y representa es una gran adición a nuestra comunidad.”
El alcalde de Storm Lake Mike Porsch dio la bienvenida a los presentes durante el evento.
El presidente de ICCC Jesse Ullrich se refirió a las metas que ICCC tiene con el proyecto de construcción. “Todo esto es parte de nuestro proceso estratégico para unir a todos los servicios de nuestra institución en uno solo lugar,” dijo.
Cabe mencionar, que en la actualidad algunos estudiantes de ICCC deben de viajar hasta Fort Dodge para tomar sus clases, mientras que los estudiantes que asisten a clases en Storm Lake para asistir a clases necesitan dirigirse a tres ubicaciones separadas: el edificio AEA en Flint Drive, Storm Lake High School y la Universidad Buena Vista.
Entre los cursos especializados que ICCC ofrece en la actualidad son: soldadura, anatomía, psicología, y microbiología; sin embargo, no son programas completos, a excepción de enfermería.
“Nuestro propósito como colegio comunitario es que nuestros estudiantes puedan venir a nuestro campus, terminar sus carreras y certificaciones en el menor tiempo posible y con la mínima deuda estudiantil; para que al graduarse, los estudiantes puedan tener una mejor calidad de vida. El nuevo centro educacional de Storm Lake va a ser una pieza clave para alcanzar el propósito deseado.”
El presidente de ICCC, Jesse Ullrich, habló sobre las carreras que el nuevo centro abarcará, al igual que agradeció a los colaboradores que ayudaron a hacer posible la construcción del proyecto.
El edificio de dos pisos incluirá 16 aulas de clase con ocho aulas en cada piso, un centro de recursos académicos, y un centro de exámenes que podrá ser utilizado por compañías externas y una academia de carreras para que los estudiantes de preparatoria se inscriban en un conjunto de cursos específicos asociados a la carrera que van a estudiar. También tendrá cuatro laboratorios de enfermería y un aula multi usos con paredes movibles para expandir el espacio entre los salones.
Ademas, el nuevo centro ofrecerá programas adicionales en soldadura, electricidad, manufactura y cursos certificados de auxiliares de enfermería. Al igual que se ofrecerán clases gratuitas de inglés y preparación para obtener el diploma de preparatoria (HiSET program, por su nombre en inglés).
“Es un proyecto emocionante para la comunidad,” agregó Jesse. “El nuevo edificio va a tener un gran impacto ya que muchas personas van a tener la oportunidad de darle un buen uso a las nuevas instalaciones, desde los jóvenes de preparatoria, a estudiante de ICCC y hasta adultos que deseen aprender inglés o conseguir la preparación necesaria para posteriormente transferirse a una institución universitaria de cuatro años. Las posibilidades serán muchas.”
Se espera que la construcción del nuevo centro de ICCC se finalice entre la primavera y el verano del próximo año, y aunque al inicio del proyecto se pensaba solo construir el primer piso del edificio por el costo del proyecto, pero durante el proceso de licitación el precio terminó por debajo del presupuesto que se tenía previsto, el edificio se podrá finalizar por completo. “Storm Lake siempre ha sido una prioridad para nosotros y lo continuara siendo así,” agregó Jesse.
ICCC sirve a nueve condados de Iowa y es uno de los cinco colegios comunitarios más grandes del estado.
La institución recibió una subvención de $1 millón a cargo de Career Academy Grant (subvención de la academia de carreras, por su traducción en español) del 2022 por parte del Departamento de Educación de Iowa, dinero que se invirtió en este proyecto.

On April 27, the Storm Lake community gathered with several city council members and Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) workers for the groundbreaking ceremony that would allow to begin construction of ICCC's new Educational Center.
The mayor of the city Mike Porsch welcomed those present and shared a few words about this project and how the institution has been an integral part of the community.

“I appreciate [Iowa Central’s] expansion in the community, and just the way the progressive nature that the college is,” Porsch said. “It move forward in the world of education, and it’s a great addition for our community.”
Following this, the Mayor introduced ICCC President Jesse Ullrich who talked more about the new building and the goals ICCC has with the project.
“This is a part of our strategic process to unify all of our services from Iowa Central into one location in Storm Lake,” he said.
Currently, some ICCC students must travel to Fort Dodge to take part of their classes, while those students attending classes in Storm Lake must go to three separate locations: the AEA building on Flint Drive, Storm Lake High School and Buena Vista University.
It should be added that some of the courses offered involve specialized classes in welding, anatomy, psychology, microbiology, among others. However, they are not complete programs, except for nursing.
“Iowa Central’s purpose is for our students to come to our campus, finish their degrees and certifications in the shortest amount of time possible with the least amount of student loan debt, so that they can have a better life,” Ullrich explained. “The Storm Lake Learning Center is going to be a key piece to that.”
The two-story building will include 16 classrooms with eight classrooms on each floor, an academic resource center, an exam center that can be used by other organizations, and a career academy for high school students to enroll in a set of specific courses associated with the career of their choice. It will also have four nursing labs and a multi-purpose classroom with movable walls to expand the space between classrooms.
Also, the new center will offer additional programs in welding, electrical, manufacturing and certified nursing assistant courses. As well as free ELL and HiSET, high school degree program, classes.
During the inauguration, Jesse Ullrich, the President of ICC, elaborated on the scope of the new center and expressed gratitude to the partners who helped make the project's construction possible.
"It's an exciting project for the community," Ullrich added. "This is going to have a big impact as many people can make good use of these new facilities; from high school students to Iowa Central students, to adults looking to learn English or get the necessary preparation to transfer to a four-year college. The possibilities are endless."
The Iowa Central Educational Center is expected to be completed between spring and summer of next year; at first it was planned to only finish the first floor of the building for next year because of the costs of the project, but during the bidding process the price ended up below the expected budget, so the building can be finished completely.
“Storm Lake has always been a priority for us, and we continue to prioritize it,” Ullrich said.
Iowa Central serves nine Iowa counties and is one of the five largest community colleges in the state.
The institution received a $1 million Career Academy Grant in 2022 from the Iowa Department of Education, money that was invested in this project.
