Maggie Reyes de Storm Lake es la especialista de comunicaciones de Upper Des Moines Opportunity (UDMO) para el condado de Buena Vista, ella fue escogida como la Grand Marshal (Gran Mariscal, por su traducción en español) para el desfile del 4 de julio en Storm Lake.
“Yo no pensé que la gente me tomara en cuenta para algo como esto,” Maggie comentó. “En primer lugar, no tenia idea de lo mucho que significaba recibir este reconocimiento.”
El reconocimiento de Grand Marshall se otorga a las personas que desarrollan servicios que marcan la diferencia e impacto positivo en la comunidad. Maggie explicó que las personas que asisten a su oficina para prestar sus servicios como voluntarios la denominaron sin que ella supiera cuando la ciudad solicitó recomendaciones de lideres comunitarios para ser escogidos como Grand Marshall, algo que la conmovió mucho.
Como Gran Mariscal, Maggie encabezará el desfile del 4 de julio.
Helen Vander Kooi que se dedica al voluntariado en UDMO dijo, “Ella se lo tiene muy bien merecido, estamos muy felices por ella.” Por su parte, Bruce Vander Kooi (esposo de Helen), que también se dedica al trabajo voluntario en UDMO agregó, “Maggie es una líder de nuestra comunidad muy noble, y siempre está buscando la manera de brindar ayuda a las personas de nuestra comunidad, especialmente a las personas más necesitadas.”
Helen y Bruce comentaron que conocieron a Maggie cuando comenzaron a dar su trabajo voluntario hace seis años en UDMO. “Desde entonces, nuestro vínculo creció y ahora compartimos una gran amistad.”
Sus amigos la describen como una persona alegre y muy trabajadora. “Es una persona amigable, cariñosa y dedicada a su trabajo,” comentó Bruce. “Normalmente trabaja en días festivos y en sus días de descanso, porque no quiere perder la oportunidad de recibir donaciones por parte de las persona o tiendas de víveres. Ella siempre está ahí, incluso cuando no tiene que.”
Maria Ballesteros dijo, “Maggie es una persona demasiado buena, alguien que da todo por los demás. Ella ayuda a toda la gente sin distinción de ninguna clase. Ella ayuda a todos los que llegan a UDMO.”
María dijo que ella y Maggie se conocieron hace más de 20 años, mientras trabajaban en Tyson. Maria comenzó a ser voluntaria en UDMO una vez que Maggie comenzó a trabajar ahí.
Maggie tiene siete años trabajando para UDMO, y antes de obtener su posición actual, trabajo 10 años en Tyson y posteriormente se mudó a vivir con su familia en San Luis Potosí; y después cinco años regresó nuevamente a Storm Lake donde por mucho tiempo se le dificultó encontrar empleo.
“Me pase varios meses batallando, pero como bien dicen ‘Diosito te guía hacia donde tienes que estar,” dijo. “Ahora me doy cuenta de que la espera valió la pena, porque estoy en un trabajo que no solo me trae alegría a mí, pero donde llevo alegría a los demás.”
Maggie ha recibido otros reconocimientos como el Tyson Hero el cual reconoce su determinación, trabajo duro, fe y lealtad hacia la comunidad.
“Estoy muy agradecida con la comunidad y todas las personas que donan sus horas voluntarias sin esperar nada a cambio.” Dijo Maggie, agregando. “Sin esa ayuda [los voluntarios], yo sola no sería capaz de ayudar a tantas familias. Estoy muy agradecida de que decidan usar su tiempo en una buena.”
La oficina de UDMO ofrece semanalmente despensa gratis, al igual que una gran variedad de programas que benefician a los más necesitados, como lo es el programa ‘De regreso a clases’, donde regalan mochilas con útiles escolares, al igual que 100 niños tienen la oportunidad de recibir ropa nueva; también ofrece el programa para personas mayores donde se les otorga vales de despensa para Fareway.

Buena Vista County Upper Des Moines Opportunity (UDMO) Outreach Specialist Maggie Reyes was chosen as Grand Marshal for the July 4 parade at Storm Lake.
"I didn't think people would consider me for something like this," Reyes said. "First of all, I had no idea what it meant to receive this recognition."
The Grand Marshall recognition is given to individuals who serve the community and create a great impact on it. The person nominated will start the parade on July 4th. Reyes explained that her volunteers recommended her without her knowing when the city was accepting recommendations from community leaders to be chosen as Grand Marshall. This made her emotional and grateful to her volunteers.
"She is so deserving, we are very happy for her," Helen Vander Kooi said.
Her husband, Bruce Vander Kooi, added, "Maggie is one of the most valuable members of our community, especially for the help she brings to the people who need her the most."
Helen and her husband Bruce met Reyes when they started volunteering at UDMO nearly six years ago. Since then, their bond with Reyes grew and now they share a great friendship.
Her friends describe her as a cheerful and hard-working person, to the point that she rarely takes days off.
"She’s a friendly, caring person dedicated to her work," Bruce said. "She usually works on holidays and on her days off, because she doesn't want to miss the opportunity to receive donations from people or grocery stores. She's always there, even when she doesn't have to."
"Maggie is a good person, someone who gives everything for you. She is a person who helps all people without discriminating. Everyone who gets there, she helps them," Maria Ballesteros said.
She and Reyes met more than 20 years ago, while working at Tyson. Ballesteros began volunteering at UDMO once Reyes started working there.
Reyes has been working for UDMO for seven years. But before reaching her current position, she worked 10 years in Tyson and then moved with her family to San Luis Potosi for five years and finally returned to Storm Lake where she found it difficult to find employment for a long time.
"I spent several months struggling, but as people say, ‘God guides you to where you need to be,'" she said. "Now I realize that the wait was worth it, because I'm in a job that not only brings joy to me, but where I bring joy to others."
She also has received other recognitions such as the Tyson Hero which recognizes her determination, hard work, faith and loyalty to the community.
"I'm so grateful to the community and all my volunteers," Reyes said. "Without their help, I wouldn't have been able to help so many families. I am so grateful that they decide to use their time for a kind cause."
Every week, UDMO offers a free pantry, as well as a wide variety of programs such as Back to School, where backpacks with school supplies are given away and 100 children have the opportunity to receive new clothes, the senior program, where old people receive a pantry voucher for Fareway, among many others.
"Maggie, we love you and appreciate all your effort and hard work," Helen said.
