Crawford recibe subvenciones para proyectos comunitarios

La Fundación Comunitaria del Condado de Crawford (Crawford County Community Foundation, por su nombre en inglés) entregó $140,906 en subvenciones a distintas organizaciones sin fines de lucro y otros proyectos pertenecientes al condado recientemente.
Sídney Calcagno, asociada de las Fundaciones Comunitarias del Suroeste de Iowa, dijo, “La meta del programa de subvenciones es mejorar la calidad de vida en el condado al apoyar las necesidades y oportunidades en las áreas de arte y cultura, educación, medio ambiente, salud, servicios humanos y preservación de la historia.”
De entre las 31 organizaciones y proyectos comunitarios beneficiados, el Departamento de Parques y Recreación de Denison recibió una subvención de $7,600 que se utilizará para reemplazar el King Castle del área de juegos de Washington Park.
El director del departamento de parques y recreación Brian Kempfert explicó que se busca poner un área de juegos inclusiva que permita a todos los miembros de la comunidad con o sin discapacidades a usar el área de juegos.
“Un área de juegos inclusiva busca tener los aspectos de que no importa cuáles sean las capacidades físicas de un individuo – con movilidad total o limitada – todos pueden usar la mayor parte del área de juegos como sea posible,” explicó. “Buscamos que el diseño sea algo más moderno y que ademas dure mucho más tiempo que el área de juego actual.”
Según Brian, se planea que el diseño del área de juegos tenga más rampas en vez de escaleras, para que personas que usan sillas de ruedas, andadores o que tienen otras dificultades de movilidad puedan disfrutar de la estructura.
Brian también comentó que sabe el valor sentimental que tiene el área de juegos actual para muchos de los miembros de Denison que entre 1997 y 1998 ayudaron tanto financieramente como a construir el área de juegos. “No estamos tratando de quitarles recuerdos ni nada de eso, pero ha llegado a un punto en el que una vieja estructura de madera como esta está empezando a mostrar su edad y está llegando a un punto donde necesita ser reemplazada,” explicó.
Por el momento, el proyecto se encuentra en la fase de diseño y de recaudación de fondos, por lo que se planea comenzar con la renovación entre el verano u otoño del próximo año, ya que el costo total del proyecto, depende del diseño final que se escoja.
“Estamos viendo varias opciones para los diseños, ya que hay al menos cuatro compañías distintas que nos dieron dichas opciones,” explicó Brian. “Los precios entre los diseños varían desde los $300 mil hasta los $600 mil, por lo que aún no estamos seguros cuánto dinero vamos a requerir, pero una vez que se tome una decisión, compartiremos cada detalle con la comunidad.”

Otras organizaciones que fueron beneficiarias de las subvenciones fueron: El proyecto de Wellness Center recibió una subvención de $5,000, dinero que se agregó al fondo para la construcción del proyecto. Las Fundaciones Comunitarias del Suroeste de Iowa están afiliadas a la Fundación Comunitaria de Omaha. El grupo incluye nueve condados que se han unido para minimizar los costos administrativos, con el apoyo administrativo proporcionado por la Fundación Comunitaria de Omaha. Cada condado está dirigido por su propia junta asesora compuesta por personas que viven en el condado.
Uno de estos afiliados es la Fundación Comunitaria del Condado de Crawford, que tiene como objetivo mejorar la calidad de vida en el Condado de Crawford apoyando las necesidades de la comunidad en las áreas de participación cívica, cultura, salud, educación y servicios sociales.
La Fundación se estableció en el 2005 y, desde entonces, ha infundido más de 1.9 millones en subvenciones y becas para apoyar a organizaciones e individuos en todo el condado.

The Crawford County Community Foundation awarded $140,906 in grants to nonprofit organizations and other county-based projects during its Spring 2023 grant cycle.
“The goal of this grant program is to improve the quality of life in the county by supporting needs and opportunities in the areas of arts and culture, education, environment, health, human services, and historic preservation,” said Sydney Calcagno, Community Foundations of Southwest Iowa associate.
Among the 31 community organizations and projects benefited, Denison's Parks and Recreation received a $7,600 grant; this will be used to replace the playground equipment in Washington Park, more specifically King Castle.
Parks and Recreation Department Director Brian Kempfert explained that the goal is to create an all-inclusive playground that allows all members in the community with or without disabilities to use the playground.
“An inclusive playground seeks to have the aspects that no matter what an individual's abilities are – with full or limited mobility – everyone can use as much of the playground as possible," he explained. "We want the design to be something more modern and also last much longer than the current playground.”
Because of this, the design of the playground is planned to have more ramps instead of stairs so that people who use wheelchairs, walkers or who have other mobility difficulties can enjoy the structure.
Kempfert also commented that, while he doesn't think it will be an obstacle to the new playground, he knows the sentimental value that the current playground has for many of Denison's members since this structure came along thanks to the help of the community back in 1997-1998; At the time, many of the community members helped both fund the playground and build it.
“We are not trying to take away memories or anything like that, but it’s gotten to a point where an old wood structure like this one is starting to show its age and getting to a place where it needs to be replaced,” he said.
At the moment, the project is in the design and fundraising phase, so Kempfert expects to start with the renovation between the summer or fall of next year; This is because the total cost depends on the final design the department chooses.
"We're looking at several options for designs, as there are at least four different companies that gave us those options," Kempfert explained. "Prices among designs range from $300,000 to $600,000, so we're not yet sure how much money we're going to require, but once a decision is made, we'll share every detail with the community."

On the other hand, other Denison organizations were also part of the grant recipients; the Crawford County Recreation Center Committee received a $5,000 grant, which was added to the project's construction fund. Meanwhile, the Denison Fire Department Volunteer Association received a $5,000 grant, which will be used for the Crawford County Search and Rescue Team (CCSAR).
It should be added that LA PRENSA tried to contact the fire department, but received no response.
The Community Foundations of Southwest Iowa are affiliates of the Omaha Community Foundation. The group includes nine counties that have come together to minimize administrative costs, with back-office support provided by the Omaha Community Foundation. Each county is led by its own advisory board made up of individuals who live in the county.
One of these affiliates is the Crawford County Community Foundation, which aims to improve the quality of life in Crawford County by supporting community needs in the areas of civic engagement, culture, health, education, and social services.
Since the Foundation was established in 2005, it has infused more than 1.9 million in grants and scholarships to support organizations and individuals across the county.
“This speaks to the generous, philanthropic spirit of our communities,” said Sunni Kamp, Southwest Iowa Foundations director. “With the support of our donors, charitable funds allocated through the community foundation, and our participation in the County Endowment Fund Program, we continue to invest valuable resources back into projects and initiatives throughout Crawford County.”
