El pasado 20 de mayo, la compañía J. M. Smucker Co. anunció que al menos 49 de sus productos de crema de cacahuate fueron expuestos a una contaminación de salmonela. La compañía está trabajando junto con la Administración de Comida y Drogas de los Estados Unidos (FDA por sus siglas en inglés) para investigar la razón por la que algunos de sus productos fueron contaminados—hasta el momento no se sabe qué causo la exposición a la salmonella, pero se estima que el brote proviene de la facilidad de J. M. Smucker Co. en Lexington, Kentucky.
Hasta el momento, se han reportado 14 personas enfermas y dos hospitalizaciones después de consumir los productos JIF, pero aún no hay fallecidos. La salmonela es un organismo que causa infecciones serias que pueden llegar a ser mortales si niños pequeños, personas de la tercera edad, o personas que sufren de un sistema inmune frágil la contraen. On May 20th, J.M. Smucker Co. voluntarily announced that at least 49 of its peanut butter products were exposed to salmonella contamination. The company is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to figure out why these products were contaminated—so far it is unknown what caused the salmonella outbreak, but the outbreak is estimated to come from the J.M. Smucker Co. facility in Lexington, KY.
So far, 14 people have been reported sick and two hospitalized after consuming JIF products, while there have been no deaths reported. Among the reported cases, at least one case occurred in the following states: Arkansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, Washington. Iowa has not reported any cases so far.
If you or someone in your family has recently consumed JIF peanut butter products and has developed symptoms, J.M. Smucker Co. and the FDA still recommend you visit your doctor as soon as possible. On the other hand, if you or someone in your family has purchased but not consumed JIF products, you can check the FDA's online website, or the code list provided below, to make sure your product is not contaminated.
Something to keep in mind, according to the FDA and J. M. Smucker Co., is to that these products can last up to two years before their expiration date, so consumers should check all JIF products in their home. Lot codes vary from 1274425-2140425—if the first seven digits end in 425, it is recommended to discard your JIF product.

Salmonella is an organism that causes serious infections that can become fatal if young children, the elderly, or people suffering from a fragile immune system contract it. Usually, salmonellosis symptoms take 12 to 72 hours to develop; these include: fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, among other symptoms according to the FDA's website.
"The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that approximately 450 persons in the United States die each year from acute salmonellosis,” according to the FDA.
Rarely, this organism can enter the infected person’s bloodstreams and produce severe illness such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis. However, salmonellosis lasts four to seven days and most patients recover without the need for treatment, according to the FDA.
This incident is still under investigation by the FDA and will be updated as soon as more information becomes available.
