Adopte una familia de Storm Lake esta navidad

La cede de Upper Des Moines Opportunity (UDMO)en Storm Lake se ha unido junto al periódico Storm Lake Times Pilot para llevar a cabo el programa anual Adopt-A-Family (Adopta a una familia, por su nombre en inglés), que consiste en adoptar a una familia de bajos recursos, que este pasando por momentos difícil y no tengan los recursos suficientes para comprar regalos a sus hijos.

Maggie Reyes especialista de comunicaciones de UDMO en el condado de Buena Vista comentó que a pesar de que la organización tiene un límite de ofrecimiento de 200 aplicaciones para el programa, la organización ha recibido hasta el momento 200 aplicaciones de familias más 50 de personas de la tercera edad. Cabe mencionar que cierre de esta edición, UDMO solo habían adoptado a 80 familias.

“Si las personas necesitan ayuda, no se las voy a negar,” dijo Maggie. “Así que tengo que trabajar duro para que se adopten a todas las familias.”

Si una familia no está inscrita en UDMO y desea aplicar para formar parte del programa debe de llenar una aplicación y someterla al centro localizado en 620 Michigan St. Storm Lake. En la aplicación, las familias necesitan explicar cuál es la actual situación económica en la que se encuentran, qué tipo de ingresos reciben, los nombres de todos los integrantes de la familia, el sexo de los niños, dirección de vivienda o apartamento, talla de ropa o zapatos, y las cosas qué les gustaría recibir en la navidad.

Maggie explicó que en las listas de peticiones de regalos, las familias en su mayoría solicitan cosas sencillas como chamarras, botas para nieve, bufandas, sudaderas, calcetas, guantes, y otros artículos esenciales que les ayudan a protegerse de las bajas temperaturas del invierno.

“Siempre insisto en las familias que en las listas pongan juguetes para sus hijos, pero la mayoría me dice que prefieren proteger a sus hijos del invierno,” comentó Maggie. “Con solo recibir lo básico están agradecidos.”

Maggie comentó con tristeza, “Se me parte el corazón al corazón al ver tantas familias que se encuentran en situaciones de pobreza extrema, ya que a pesar de que no se habla mucho sobre el tema, el COVID sigue afectando a muchas familias.

Ella comentó que mucha gente que asiste a UDMO por los programas de ayuda o a recibir despensa sigue sufriendo por la pandemia ya que están enfermas o sufren de otros problemas médicos que los hace vulnerable ante el virus, “y a causa de esto han perdido sus trabajos o no pueden mantener sus empleos, lo que nos les ayuda a estabilizase financieramente.”

Agregó, “Muchas personas apenas y pueden pagar su renta o comprar comida, olvídate de que puedan comprar lujos para sus hijos o incluso ellos mismos. Ayudar a esta gente es algo que me da sentimiento y me hace reflexionar sobre la situación en la que yo estoy. Doy gracias a Dios de que tengo vida, salud, y este trabajo para ayudar a los demás.”

Cabe mencionar que aún quedan cientos de familias y viejitos para adoptar. Las personas interesadas en ayudar a alguien individualmente, o escoger una familia para adoptar en esta navidad debe de comunicarse con UDMO al (712)732-1757, también se puede comunicar vía correo electrónico con Maggie a mreyes@udmo.com para obtener más información acerca de la familia o individuo adoptado, al igual de los productos que la familia necesita en esta navidad.

El UDMO recomienda a los donantes comprar en la medida de lo posible, los productos de la lista de la familia adoptada, pero también pueden agregar otros productos que no aparecen en la lista de la persona o familia. Con respecto a los productos alimenticios el UDM recomienda comprar productos no perecederos o tarjetas de regalo para despensa. Finalmente, los regalos pueden ser entregados en una caja o bolsa con el número de la familia que se escogió, y enviados a la oficina de UDMO entre las 8 a.m. y 4 p.m., el último día para depositar los paquetes es el 20 de diciembre, para que los voluntarios que entregan los paquetes a las familias tengan suficiente tiempo de hacer la entrega a los domicilios de los recipientes antes del día de navidad.

“Me emociona ver el cariño y amor de parte de la gente. Me gusta ver como la comunidad se preocupa mucho por los demás sin conocerse,” puntualizó Maggie.

Upper Des Moines Opportunity (UDMO) in Storm Lake has teamed up with the Storm Lake Times Pilot for the annual Adopt-A-Family program, which involves adopting a low-income family that is going through a difficult time and does not have the resources to give gifts to their children.

Communications Specialist for Upper Des Moines Opportunity (UDMO) in Buena Vista County Maggie Reyes said that although the organization has a limit to receive 200 applications for the program, the organization received 200 families and 50 elderly people this year; at the end of this issue, only 80 families had been adopted.

"If people need help, I'm not going to deny it to them," Reyes said. "I have to work hard to get all families adopted."

If a family wants to apply to be part of the program, they must fill out an application, if they are not enrolled with UDMO already; The family has to answer what their situation is, what kind of income they receive, the name of all family members, if they have children, their address, the size of clothes or shoes and things they would like to receive for Christmas.

However, Reyes says that in most of the items families asked for were simple things such as jackets, snow boots, scarves, sweatshirts, socks, gloves, among other products that protect them against low temperatures.

"I urged families to write down toys for their children, but most told me they prefer to protect their children from winter," he said. "Just by receiving the basics they are grateful."

Seeing so many families are in situations of extreme poverty made her heart ache since, although there is not much talk about the subject, COVID continues to affect many families.

Reyes commented that many people who attend UDMO for aid programs or for the food pantry continue to suffer from the pandemic since they are sick or suffer from other medical problems that make them vulnerable to the virus. Because of this they have lost their jobs or can’t keep other jobs, so they cannot be financially stable.

"A lot of people can barely afford their rent or buy groceries, forget about buying luxuries for their children or even themselves," Reyes said. "Helping these people makes me emotional and makes me reflect on the situation I am in. I thank God that I’m alive and health so I can do my job and help others."

There are still hundreds of families and elders to adopt, so if you are interested in helping, what you have to do is choose the family or individual and write down the number. Then, contact UDMO at (712)732-1757 or contact Maggie Reyes via email at mreyes@udmo.com, so she can give you more information about the products your chosen family needs.

Buy the products on the list and even something extra if you wish, but make sure that any food products are non-perishable or gift cards for groceries. Finally, you can deliver your gifts in a box or bag with your chosen family number visible at the UDMO office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. until December 20, so volunteers can deliver donations to the families by Christmas.

"I'm excited to see the love and support from people. I like watching how the community cares a lot about each other without knowing each other," Reyes added.
