El representante estatal Steven Holt está pidiendo una investigación sobre un juez de Iowa acusado de conducta impropia durante un proceso de nominación judicial.
El juez de distrito Kurt Stoebe se desempeñó como juez principal adjunto en el distrito 2B de Iowa, que cubre el centro-norte de Iowa. State Representative Steven Holt is calling for an investigation into an Iowa judge accused of improper conduct during a judicial nomination process.
District Judge Kurt Stoebe served as deputy chief judge in Iowa's 2B district, which covers north-central Iowa. While serving on a nominating committee to fill a vacancy in the district, Stoebe was accused of disparaging several of applicants, which could contaminate the process.
Stoebe resigned from the nominating commission and the process began again, eventually throwing out the same top finalists. Stoebe also resigned from his position as deputy chief judge, although he still serves as a district judge.
Holt, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, announced Wednesday his intention to launch an investigation into Stoebe's behavior during the nomination process.
“If, in fact, these allegations are true, the implications go far beyond the nominating committee and call into question the integrity of the bench,” said Holt, R-Denison. “If in fact a judge is willing to commit these acts to promote his favorite candidate… how can a lawyer or a citizen appear before this judge and have faith in the integrity of the process?”
Stoebe declined to comment on the possible investigation.
Holt said confidentiality rules in the judiciary prevented him from accessing many of the details about the incidents from the nominating committee. Conducting an investigation, he said, would allow the legislature to issue subpoenas and access more information.
"We believe that our subpoenas and our investigation will exceed those confidentiality requirements," Holt said.
Holt emphasized that the investigation was not an accusation against Stoebe, just a "search for information." Holt said he had not contacted the judiciary about his concerns until he informed them of his intention to investigate.
