Perry ofrecerá clase gratuita de cocina

El Perry Area Food Pantry y Iowa State Extension and Outreach están ofreciendo una clase gratuita de cocina este 17 de enero de 1 p.m. a 2:30 p.m. como parte del programa “Spend Smart, Eat Smart” (Gasta inteligentemente, come inteligentemente, por su traducción al español).

La clase se llevará a cabo en la iglesia Mt. Olivet Lutheran en Perry, Iowa, y los interesados pueden inscribirse llamando al (515)570-0627. Cabe agregar que hay un límite de 20 espacios para inscribirse.
Tom Keinert, especialista en comida y salud de la Universidad Estatal de Iowa (ISU, por sus siglas en inglés) dijo, “Algo que me gusta sobre el programa es que ofrece recetas sencillas en línea con pocos ingredientes, pero que a su vez son nutritivas y baratas.”
El programa Spend Smart, Eat Smart se enfoca en datos sobre nutrición, formas de ser un consumidor responsable, planificación de variedad de comidas y compras de la semana, entre otras cosas. El sitio en línea ofrece varios videos de recetas al igual que videos de ejercicios para hacer en casa.
Tom será el instructor de la clase y lo acompañará la interprete Rosa Gonzales, especialista en ciencias humanas ISU.
“ISU Extension busca ofrecer más oportunidades de programas a las comunicades hispanas en Iowa,” comentó Rosa. “Para hacer esto, necesitamos conocer más de las comunidades hispanas en otros pueblos para saber que programas les gustaría que lleváramos a sus comunidades.”
Rosa comenzó a trabajar para ISU Extension hace un año y tiene bajo y supervisa 10 condados, entre ellos los condados de Dallas, Polk y Crawford. Sin embargo, ella busca crear más conexiones dentro de estas comunidades para averiguar los programas en los que les gustaría participar a cada comunidad.
“Ofrecemos varios programas enfocados en literatura temprana, nutrición, finanzas, paternidad, entre otros,” explicó. “A pesar de que hay algunos programas en los que yo no participo, estamos dispuestos a traerlos a sus comunidades y proveer capacitación para que alguien de su región pueda servir como intérprete del programa.”
Uno de estos programas es ¡Salir Adelante!, el cual se enfoca en proveer información y otros recursos a estudiantes y sus familias sobre ir a la universidad. Según Rosa, ISU Extension planea ofrecer este programa en el Condado de Crawford en la primavera de este año.
Otro programa es Su Salud Primero, el cual provee información sobre nutrición y salud en español.

Perry Area Food Pantry and Iowa State Extension and Outreach are offering a free cooking class on Jan. 17 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. as part of the "Spend Smart, Eat Smart" program.

The class will be held at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in Perry, IA, and those interested can register by calling (515)570-0627. There is a limit of 20 spaces to register.
"One thing I like about the program is that it offers simple online recipes with few ingredients, but which are also nutritious and cheap," said Tom Keinert, a food and health specialist at Iowa State University (ISU).
The Spend Smart, Eat Smart program focuses on nutritional information, ways to be a responsible consumer, budgeting for meals, among other things. The website offers several recipe videos as well as exercise videos to do at home.
Keinert will be the class instructor and will be accompanied by Rosa Gonzales, a human science specialist at ISU, as interpreter.
"ISU Extension seeks to offer more program opportunities to Latino communities in Iowa," said Gonzales. "To do this, we need to know more about these communities in other towns to know what programs they would like us to bring to them."
She began working for ISU Extension a year ago and is in charge of overseeing 10 counties, including Dallas, Polk and Crawford counties. However, Gonzales seeks to create more connections within these communities to find out the programs each community would like to participate in.
"We offer several programs focused on early literature, nutrition, finance, parenting, among others," she explained. "Even though there are some programs that I don't participate in, we are willing to bring them to their communities and provide training, so that someone from their region can serve as an interpreter for the program."
One of the programs is ¡Salir Adelante! Pathways for Our Future, which focuses on providing information and other resources to students and their families about going to college. According to Gonzales, ISU Extension plans to offer this program in Crawford County in the spring of this year, but dates have not been announced.
ISU Extension is also offering a Spanish-language newsletter called Su Salud Primero, which provides nutrition and health information in Spanish.
