Emilia Marroquín fue seleccionada para deslumbrar el pasillo de las personalidades famosas de Iowa 2022, por su destacada trayectoria de ayudar al prójimo.
Al preguntarle sus sentimientos al saber que fue la escogida para mérito de los famosos, Emilia respondió, “Siento una gran satisfacción personal y al mismo tiempo pienso que no hecho mucho, porque ayudar y participar para ayudar a nuestros semejantes, no es un mérito, sino que una responsabilidad humana.” Expresó Emilia con la distintiva humildad que la caracteriza.
Emilia vive en Storm Lake desde hace 21 años, y desde hace 15 años ofrece su ayuda sin buscar recompensa de ninguna clase en trabajos voluntario para conectar a miembros de la comunidad con recursos, agencias o cualquiera sea la necesidad de la persona o grupo familiar. “En mis primeros 5 años de vivir en Storm Lake, me dedique a trabajar y aprender inglés, no me involucraba mucho en las necesidades de mi comunidad.” Con el tiempo ella se fue involucrando cada vez más, y como ella lo dice, “muchas veces no necesitas compartir mucho tiempo con una persona para darte cuenta de las necesidades palpables que la persona o esa familia tiene.”
Por un tiempo, Emilia trabajo en el programa de Head Start. “Eso me ayudó a ver las muchas necesidades de los niños y sus familias.” Y comenzó a involucrarse directamente con cuanta familia se lo permitiera. “Nunca he pensado que darle una mano amiga al necesitado sea un trabajo voluntario; pienso y creo que es como una responsabilidad de principios, una responsabilidad… humana, una responsabilidad de cristianos.”

La trayectoria de Emilia en Storm Lake, no solo se destaca en ayudar a las personas, sino que también es una activa participante en las diferentes actividades de la comunidad. Ella es embajadora de su cultura natal salvadoreña, ya que también es fundadora del grupo de baile típico de niños y adolescentes Kon-Kultura de Storm Lake, al igual que toma la responsabilidad de formar y desarrollar otras actividades multiculturales de su comunidad.
“Yo le digo a mis niños [miembros del grupo], que no importa el tiempo que ellos tengan disponible para darle a los demás, porque con un poquito tiempo se puede marcar la diferencia en la sociedad, ya que para mí lo importante no es la cantidad, sino que la calidad del tiempo que se pueda compartir; y muchas veces una hora de tu tiempo puede marcar la diferencia en nuestra comunidad.”
Al finalizar nuestra conversación, Emilia quiso agradecer a todas las personas “que han creído en mí, a todas las personas que me han apoyado y que han visto en mí, cosas que talvez ni yo misma me daba cuenta que tenía.“
De igual manera hace publico su agradecimiento a todas las personas que de forma anónima la denominaron para tan importante reconocimiento.
Cada año, la Ceremonia de Inducción al Salón de la Fama de Latinos de Iowa (2022 Iowa Latino Hall of Fame, por su nombre en español), se realiza durante el Mes de la Herencia Latina que se celebra del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre. Este año, la ceremonia y la recepción se realizará el sábado, 15 de octubre de 5:30pm a las 7:30pm., en Des Moines Art Center (4700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312). El evento es gratis y abierto al público, las personas que deseen participar lo pueden hacer, ya que la señora Diane Daniels ha ofrecido en su página de Facebook un transporte colectivo que saldrá de Storm Lake para todas las personas que deseen apoyar a Emilia, en tan merecido reconocimiento.

When asked about her feelings knowing that she was chosen for the merit of the famous, Emilia replied, "I feel a great personal satisfaction and at the same time I think that I have not done much, because helping and participating to help our fellow men is not a merit, but rather a human responsibility.” Emilia expressed with the distinctive humility that characterizes her.
Emilia has lived in Storm Lake for 21 years, and for 15 years she has offered her help without seeking any kind of reward in volunteer work to connect members of the community with resources, agencies or whatever the need of the person or family group may be. “In my first 5 years of living in Storm Lake, I was dedicated to working and learning English, I was not very involved in the needs of my community.” Over time she became more and more involved, and as she puts it, “often you don't need to spend a lot of time with a person to realize the palpable needs that person or that family has.”
For a time, Emilia worked in the Head Start program. “That helped me see the many needs of the children and their families.” And she began to get directly involved with as many family as she could. “I have never thought that giving a helping hand to the needy is a volunteer job; I think and believe that it is like a responsibility of principles, a responsibility… human, a responsibility of Christians.”
Emilia's background in Storm Lake not only stands out in helping people, but she is also an active participant in the different activities of the community. She is an ambassador of her native Salvadoran culture, since she is also the founder of the typical dance group for children and adolescents Kon-Kultura of Storm Lake, as well as taking responsibility for forming and developing other multicultural activities in the community. her.
“I tell my children [members of the group] that it does not matter how much time they have available to give to others, because with a little time you can make a difference in society, since for me what is important is not the quantity, but rather the quality of the time that can be shared; and many times an hour of your time can make a difference in our community.”
