DMU manager updates on water project

Rory Weis, general manager of Denison Municipal Utilities (DMU), recently provided the Denison City Council with an update on the water main improvement project. Similarly, he thanked the council for their cooperation and thanked the residents for understanding the need to divert traffic from North 20th Street where the work is currently taking place.
Below are the points of his presentation.
• Installation of the C900 12-inch water main by Max Smith Construction LLC, Creston, began earlier this summer on the east side of the water tower north of 18th Street. (C900 is a standard adopted by the American Water Works Association for PVC pipe).
• A water main was installed as far north as 20th Street. From there, contractors installed some pipes to the north and installed more pipes to the south to connect to an existing water main north of 20th Street.
• Work on the south end of the project was slightly delayed because the contractor had to replace a piece of storm sewer pipe to comply with an Iowa Department of Natural Resources regulation that requires separation between a main water main and a storm sewer line or sanitary sewer line.
• In the early part of this week, the contractor will install the northernmost water main to the intersection of North 9th Avenue.
Plans have changed a bit at that intersection. Initially, the pipe was going to be directionally drilled, but Weis said that due to the number of underground utility lines in that area, an open cut will be made to install the main water main. A 12-inch pipe cannot flex as much as it would need to, given the slope of the bank and the amount of existing underground utilities.
• Once the contractor installs the water main on the east side of the North 20/North 9 Avenue intersection, the majority of the water main will be directionally drilled. When the route of the water main reaches the south side of 9th Avenue North, the main will be installed.
• The destination of the North 9th Avenue water main is the site of a new 500,000 gallon spheroid-shaped water tower to be built near the Senior League baseball field. That location is not far north of the existing 200,000 gallon water tower located on the Little League field. That tower will eventually be brought down.
• The purpose of the project is to increase water flow and water pressure for customers in the northeast and east parts of Denison.
• Along with the work mentioned above, more fire hydrants will be installed in the northeast section of the community.
