Después de acabar el instituto, se trasladó a California para estudiar en la Universidad de Los Ángeles, en donde volvió a cautivar por sus hermosas facciones, siendo elegida “Reina del Campus”.

Este título le valió para asistir a una sesión fotográfica cuyas imágenes fueron repartidas por varias revistas de la ciudad angelina.

Además de sus incursiones como modelo fotográfica, Donna consiguió debutar en el teatro universitario.

Las fotografías le llevaron a ser contratada por la Metro Goldwyn Mayer en el año 1941.

En 1946 logró el estrellato gracias a la película de Frank Capra “It’s a Wonderful Life,” (Qué Bello Es Vivir), un filme navideño en el que interpretó a Mary Hatch, la mujer de James Stewart. De ahí viene el lema de la ciudad de Denison, el cual se encuentra plasmado en el imponente tanque de agua de Denison.

La estrella de Denison tuvo cuatro hijos, Mary, Timmothy, Penny y Anthony. Donna se casó tres veces.

LA PRENSA Iowa tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a una de las hijas de Donna, Mary Anne Owen, mientras visitaba Denison desde Nueva York.
