Denison se prepara para una celebración vibrante de su diversidad cultural con la tercera edición del Festival de la Herencia del Inmigrante, organizado por LULAC Denison.
Alma Puga, presidenta de LULAC Denison, confirmó a este medio que todo está listo para el evento, que se llevará a cabo el sábado 29 de junio en Washington Park.
El festival comenzará con un colorido desfile que partirá desde la calle del correo y culminará en Washington Park. Las actividades en el parque se desarrollarán desde las 3:00 p.m. hasta las 8:00 p.m., ofreciendo un día completo de entretenimiento y cultura.
Este año, el festival contará con la participación de diversos grupos artísticos, tanto profesionales como aficionados. Alma destacó la presencia del grupo DMMV Lion Dance de Lincoln, Nebraska, conocido por sus espectaculares danzas del león, y del grupo UMBC Crusaders de Waterloo, famoso por sus animadas presentaciones musicales. Además, el grupo de Storm Lake, Peinakapw Pohnpei, compuesto por miembros de diferentes estados de Micronesia, también se presentará con sus danzas tradicionales y música folclórica. Entre los talentos locales, ZV Musical, una banda de residentes latinos de Denison, aportará su ritmo y energía con una mezcla de géneros latinos.
El festival también ofrecerá una variada selección de vendedores de comida que representan diferentes culturas, y puestos de empleadores que buscan atraer a nuevos trabajadores para sus compañías. Entre los empleadores presentes, se destacan varias empresas locales y regionales que ofrecerán información sobre oportunidades laborales. Además, habrá una subasta silenciosa con numerosos artículos interesantes que serán ofrecidos al mejor postor, entre lo que se encuentra numerosos certificados de regalo para negocios de la comunidad.
Las actividades del festival no se limitan a las presentaciones culturales. Habrá áreas dedicadas a juegos y actividades para niños y adultos que permitirán a los asistentes aprender más sobre las diversas tradiciones y costumbres de las comunidades que forman parte del condado de Crawford.
Todo lo recaudado en el festival se destinará al fondo de becas estudiantiles. "Este es el tercer año consecutivo que LULAC Denison otorga becas a nuestros estudiantes para apoyar con los gastos de sus estudios superiores," señaló Alma. “Estas becas representan una oportunidad vital para muchos jóvenes de la comunidad, permitiéndoles continuar su educación y perseguir sus sueños.”
El objetivo del festival es celebrar la riqueza cultural del condado de Crawford. "Nuestro condado está formado por hermosas culturas que se remontan a nuestros primeros pioneros,” explicó Alma. “Con los años, estas culturas no solo se han fortalecido, sino que también se han enriquecido con la llegada de nuevos inmigrantes, incluyendo las culturas asiática, sudanesa y latina, entre otras. Ven y únete a esta celebración única, donde cada cultura es valorada y cada historia es celebrada.”

Denison Prepares for a Vibrant Immigrant Heritage Festival

Denison is gearing up for a vibrant celebration of its cultural diversity with the third edition of the Immigrant Heritage Festival, hosted by LULAC Denison. Alma Puga, president of LULAC Denison, confirmed that everything is ready for the event, which will take place on Saturday, June 29, in Washington Park.
The festival will kick off with a colorful parade starting from Post Office Street and ending in Washington Park. Activities in the park will run from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., promising a full day of entertainment and cultural immersion.
This year, the festival boasts an impressive lineup of professional and amateur artistic groups. Alma highlighted the participation of the DMMV Lion Dance group from Lincoln, Nebraska, renowned for their spectacular lion dances, and the UMBC Crusaders from Waterloo, Iowa, famous for their lively musical performances. Additionally, the Storm Lake group Peinakapw Pohnpei, consisting of members from various Micronesian states, will perform traditional dances and folk music. Local talent will also shine, with ZV Musical, a Denison-based Latin band, bringing their rhythm and energy with a mix of Latin genres.
Attendees can look forward to a diverse array of food vendors representing different cultures and booths from employers seeking to attract new workers to their companies. Several local and regional businesses will be present, providing information about job opportunities and conducting on-site interviews. A silent auction will also take place, offering exciting items such as local artwork and gift certificates to community businesses.
The festival’s activities extend beyond artistic performances. There will be dedicated areas for children's games and activities, arts and crafts workshops, and cultural exhibits, giving attendees the chance to learn more about the diverse traditions and customs of the communities that make up Crawford County. For sports enthusiasts, football and basketball tournaments organized by various community groups will also be held.
All proceeds from the festival will go towards awarding six student scholarships. "This is the third consecutive year that LULAC Denison has awarded scholarships to our students to help with the expenses of their higher education," said Alma. "These scholarships represent a vital opportunity for many young people in the community, allowing them to continue their education and pursue their dreams."
The goal of the festival is to celebrate the cultural richness of Crawford County. "Our county is made up of beautiful cultures that date back to our early pioneers," Alma explained. "Over the years, these cultures have grown stronger and have been enriched by the arrival of new immigrants, including Asian, Sudanese, and Latino cultures, among others. Come join this unique celebration, where every culture is valued and every story is celebrated.”
