A native of Esteli, Nicaragua, Lorena E. López is a seasoned journalist. López started in television journalism in Nicaragua and hosted a popular talk-show for Channel 6, a primary station in her native nation. López, who is bilingual, emigrated to the United States in the 1990s. She worked in a variety of positions, including as a nurse, before launching Denison, Iowa-based LA PRENSA Spanish Language Newspaper with her son, Carlos Arguello, a Des Moines entrepreneur. López, the owner and primary writer and photographer for LA PRENSA, is frequently a guest or source for major national publications and news outlets, such as The Washington Post, The New York Times and Univision, where her views on Latinos in rural areas and observations on the Iowa presidential nominating process are highly sought. Carlos Argüello, a Des Moines-based entrepreneur, is the son of La Prensa editor Lorena Lopez. Argüello and his mother co-founded La Prensa in 2006. Argüello, whose career started with John Deere and evolved into independent ownership of several businesses in Iowa, continues as a consultant for the Spanish-language newspaper. Argüello is a native of Managua, Nicaragua. He now lives in Grimes, outside of Des Moines, with his wife, Melinda, and two children, Sebastian and Evelyn. An alum of the University of Northern Iowa, he earned the John Pappajohn Entrepreneur Award while at that school.

Meriah is the latest addition to LA PRENSA, bringing 10+ years of graphic design experience. She has visited several countries in Central America and is currently studying Spanish. She is proud to call Denison her home where she lives with her husband. In addition to working with LA PRENSA, Meriah runs her own graphic design business, Roo Bea Design Co.

Jon Sampson has been doing newspaper publishing design for 25 years. He began working with LA PRENSA in 2007 and has been designing the newspaper’s ads and formatting the articles ever since. Jon lives in Carroll with his wife, Tammera, and two sons, Ben and Everett. His full-time job is Executive Director at Central Church of Carroll.

Douglas Burns, a fourth-generation Iowa journalist and co-owner of the Carroll and Jefferson, Iowa newspapers is a regular contributor to La Prensa with business and political stories. Burns, who lives in Carroll where he has overseen the newsrooms of his family’s newspapers, has written for Inside Washington Publishers in Washington, D.C., The Palm Beach Post in Florida and the Ames Tribune and Iowa Independent. Burns is an alum of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Burns also serves as the advertising consultant for La Prensa with political campaigns.
